914-395-2510

Sarah Lawrence College is located in southern Westchester County, bordering the communities of Yonkers and Bronxville, NY just 15 miles north of midtown New York City. Meredith Monk ’64 once described Sarah Lawrence College this way: “A Sarah Lawrence education teaches you that you have the right and duty to be what some people would call a troublemaker, that is, an independent, intelligent, curious person who wants to find his or her own solutions to things.” This is a place that encourages people to take risks, to go against the grain - intellectually, emotionally, artistically and politically.

Sarah Lawrence is a coeducational liberal arts college, offering undergraduate as well as graduate degrees. Located just north of New York City on a wooded campus, the College is nationally renowned for its rigorous academic and creative standards. These are fostered by small seminar classes and individual student-faculty tutorials made possible by a very low student-to-faculty ratio of 6-to-1. It is a lively community of students, scholars, and artists offering outstanding programs in the humanities, the natural sciences and mathematics, history and the social sciences, and the creative and performing arts.

The College welcomes as students men and women who display evidence of intellectual curiosity and stamina, concern for others, and the potential for personal growth. We are particularly committed to having our faculty, administration and student body reflect the social, racial and economic diversity that characterizes our society. We believe that education is enhanced by a diverse community, by the vitality of an ongoing dialogue among people with different experiences and beliefs. Today we offer a quality liberal arts undergraduate education as well as master's degree programs in several professional areas: health professions, business, counseling/psychology, and teacher training, to students during the day, evenings, weekends, and online, so that they can fit our rigorous education into their lives. We offer tremendous financial support, so that the cost of college is not a barrier to success; and we offer learning support, access to robust technology and counseling, academic, career and personal, to help our students achieve the level of success they dream about. Our student body is primarily commuter students, whose overriding similarity is that they pursue their dream of higher education while continuing to work and support families. They are overwhelmingly the first in their families to achieve a college education, and they are African American, Asian, Caucasian, Latino, ranging in age from 18 to 80, with the average age of undergraduates being 27. Balancing their responsibilities and education, it takes most of them more than the traditional four years to complete their baccalaureate, and when they finish they take their place in industry, banking, the social services, health professions and teaching. Many continue on to graduate school - Mercy's own and schools such as University of Michigan, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYU, and Fordham. 914-251-6000

Purchase College is located just 20 miles north of Manhattan in Westchester County. Purchase College, part of the State University of New York's (SUNY) network of 64 universities and colleges, was founded in 1967 by Governor Nelson Rockefeller who envisioned a major publicly funded university system. Purchase would uniquely combine, on one campus, conservatory training in the visual and performing arts with liberal arts and sciences programs. The site selected was a 500-acre working farm, originally the property of Judge Thomas Thomas, a Revolutionary War hero. In bringing two styles of education, traditional liberal arts and science programs and conservatory based arts programs into close contact on one campus, Purchase College’s founders hoped to inspire an appreciation for both intellectual and artistic talents in all students.

Purchase College today enjoys a world-class reputation for its arts programs and high rankings for its liberal arts and sciences programs. The college attracts students and faculty from around the world seeking a place where they can develop their talents, expand their minds and prepare for a life of creative independence.

The focus and diversity at Purchase College is notable. The 4,000 students and 300 faculty members here are not passive culture appreciators, they are active culture generators. By choosing to come here, individuals make a conscious decision to pursue their studies and their careers in a more intense environment.

Princeton Review named Purchase College as one of the Best 361 Colleges. The College is also included in America's Best 100 College Buys, the Unofficial Biased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges, and it is one of the 151 colleges in the Princeton Review's Best Northeastern Regional Colleges. Pace Institute began its transformation into a modern university, with emphasis on the liberal arts and sciences, under Robert Pace 42 years later. With dynamic leadership and fiscally sound management, Pace has grown into one of the largest universities in New York State, with a multi-million dollar physical plant, an endowment of over $100 million and a reputation for excellent teaching and talented, ambitious graduates.

The Dyson College of Arts and Sciences is central to the intellectual life of Pace, to shaping academic priorities, and to providing ethical, humanistic and scientific principles upon which lives and careers are founded.

Pace University draws strength from being a unified institution that offers students a choice of locations.  New York NY 10010 Manhattan City University of New York College’s School of Business and Civic undergraduate graduate  CUNY - Baruch College

646-312.4297

Baruch College, is one of the many excellent colleges within CUNY - The City University of New York. Baruch College is located at One Bernard Baruch Way, New York, NY 10010. Situated on Lexington Avenue near the Flatiron/Gramercy Park district of Manhattan, Baruch College is in the heart of one of the world’s most dynamic financial and cultural centers. The College is within easy reach of Wall Street, Midtown, and the global headquarters of major companies, firms, and organizations. This “real-world classroom” adds immeasurably to the value of a Baruch education and offers unparalleled internship, career, and networking opportunities.

Baruch College is part of a tradition that dates back more than 150 years to the founding, in 1847, of the Free Academy, the very first free public institution of higher education in the nation. Established in 1919 as City College’s School of Business and Civic Administration, the school was renamed in 1953 in honor of Bernard M. Baruch - statesman, financier, and devoted alumnus. In 1968 the school became an independent senior college in The City University of New York (CUNY) system.

Today, a thriving, urban, multicultural institution and a senior college of CUNY, Baruch attracts motivated students of proven achievement who are seriously committed to making their dreams a reality. Their ability and drive, along with the superb, professional education for which Baruch is known, have established the College’s national and international reputation for excellence. In providing opportunity for these students, the College sustains the original mission of the Free Academy and the City University, adapting that mission to the needs of New York City, once a commercial hub, now a global corporate and financial powerhouse.

212-817-8220

CUNY Baccalaureate Program is located at The Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Ave, New York, NY 10016. The City University of New York Baccalaureate Program is CUNY’s only university-wide individualized bachelor’s degree program. The Program is offered under the auspices of The CUNY Graduate School and University Center. Working one-on-one with CUNY faculty mentors, students create their own “areas of concentration” (majors), many of which are interdisciplinary. Examples include Disability Studies, Engineering Psychology, Marketing Anthropology, Middle Eastern Studies, Community Development and Technology, Artistic Traditions in Religion, and Environmental Biology. Students may take courses at any CUNY college, including The CUNY Graduate Center, The CUNY School of Professional Studies, and the City College Center for Worker Education and are encouraged to pursue independent research, fieldwork, study abroad, and other academic opportunities.

Students come to the Program from within CUNY as well as outside of CUNY. Every CUNY Baccalaureate student must be (or become) matriculated in a CUNY college. The Program is particularly well-suited for students who want to pursue an area of concentration not available in their CUNY college as a major (or not available as a major within CUNY at all), as well as for working adults who need a flexible program to earn their degree and those who can benefit from the Program’s comprehensive transfer policy.

CUNY Baccalaureate students must present the admissions committee with an academic reason for applying (e.g., a desire to complete an interdisciplinary area of concentration), a proposal for their area of concentration, a GPA of at least 2.5 both overall and on recent coursework (the average GPA upon entry is 3.1), and at least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member must maintain a minimum average of 2.5 overall and in the area(s) of concentration(s) must complete a 13-course liberal arts and sciences distribution requirement work closely with at least one full-time CUNY faculty mentor who ensures that the area of concentration is academically valid and is geared for future graduate-level study.

Where can the CUNY Baccalaureate Program lead you?
More than half of the Program’s graduates report receiving promotions or raises in their current positions or have started new careers upon earning the degree. In fact, 54% of the class of 2005 reported that they earned a new position, raise or promotion in a survey conducted just after their graduation. Seventy percent of the graduates reported that they were working in a job related to their area of concentration, and 85.5% were working in New York City.

The founders of the CUNY BA/BS had students aiming for graduate school in mind when they conceived of this program, hence its emphasis on student-faculty collaboration and the ability to take graduate level courses. The Program regularly offers workshops on applying to graduate school, and Program students have had much success with acceptance to graduate and professional schools.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior liberal arts college of the City University of New York dedicated to education and research in the fields of criminal justice, fire science and public service.

Exploring Career Opportunities With The Majors Offered @ John Jay College
To begin exploring careers, start with a basic, realistic understanding of the profession. Popular fields such as forensic science or forensic psychology may be attractive. But do you know what jobs are available after completion of a bachelor’s degree without experience in the field? Are you willing to make the commitment to these rigorous programs that may demand post-graduate study for career entry and mobility? When choosing a major you need to assess whether you can successfully complete the academic requirements required by that major. At the same time you need to start investigating the nature and demands of the careers that interest you.

The undergraduate majors offered at the college provide you with a wide variety of career opportunities. Students should not think that any major, either undergraduate or graduate, will restrict them to only certain jobs. Many students bring with them job experiences that can help them achieve a variety of different career goals.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is not only a college of criminal justice but also a liberal arts college. A liberal education-an education that emphasizes humane values in thought and action and promotes the pursuit of truth-cultivates well-educated citizens who assume responsibility for their thoughts and the impact of their actions upon the world. These are citizens who are able to think critically and to communicate their ideas effectively. At John Jay College, the general education requirements work with the majors to develop these skills by immersing students in an interdisciplinary community and exposing them to a diverse curriculum.

As John Jay offers students majors which specialize in criminal justice and related fields, it is essential that its core education requirements be broad. This is the mission of the general education requirements. The general education requirements provide exposure to the ideas essential for students to understand how work in their major discipline is part of the larger range of human concerns. Exposure to the liberal arts and sciences helps to create well-rounded individuals who can communicate with people in different scholarly communities and can understand problems outside their specialized area of study. By promoting the integration, synthesis, and application of knowledge, general education provides individuals with an awareness of their role in a diverse culture and highlights their responsibilities to the larger community.

Degrees Offered by John Jay College of Criminal Justice

John Jay College awards the Associate in Science degree, which can serve as a useful halfway mark toward the baccalaureate degree. Credits for all courses taken in fulfillment of the associate degree are applicable toward the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science at John Jay College, although the associate degree is not a prerequisite for the baccalaureate degree.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is not only a college of criminal justice but also a liberal arts college. College candidates for the baccalaureate degree Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science must complete 120 credits, composed of the general education requirements described below, a major, and electives.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice offers Master's Programs that are designed to complement the baccalaureate program and to enhance the academic and professional body of knowledge in the criminal justice field and its areas of specialization. The graduate program at John Jay consists of five degrees at the master's level:

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice
    Master of Public Administration
The MPA - Inspector General Program
Master of Science in Forensic Computing
Master of Arts in Forensic Psychology
Master of Science in Forensic Science
Master of Science in Protection Management
    BA/MA Degree Programs

The Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice offers interdisciplinary education in the fields of criminal justice, criminology, and forensic science. It combines theory, empirical research, and normative analysis. Through a well-integrated core curriculum, students are rigorously trained in social science methods, research design, statistics, and information retrieval. They are also given firm grounding in criminological theory, criminal law, criminal procedure, organizational behavior, public policy analysis, and the psychology of criminal justice.  City University NY 10031 health training primary care professionals undergraduate B.S. City College SUNY Stony Brook Downstate Syracuse Albany NYU New York Medical College Bronx Manhattan Brooklyn Primary Care American Association of Medical Colleges CUNY - Sophie Davis School Biomedical Ed

212-650-5275

The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education of the City University of New York Medical School is located at 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031. The Sophie Davis School began as a unique program to increase access to medical and health training for inner-city youths, particularly under-represented minorities, from the City's communities and schools. A major part of its mission is to train primary care professionals who will practice in medically under-served communities of New York. There are more than 1,400 graduates of whom more than 80% from the past ten years have continued in primary care.

Headquartered at the City College, The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education offers an innovative five-year program that integrates undergraduate education with the first two years of medical school. Students receive a foundation in the liberal arts, community health and social medicine as well as the biomedical sciences.

Students receive a B.S. from City College and then transfer to one of six medical schools in New York State for the third and fourth years of medical school training. In recognition of the support received from a specialized State-funded program, graduates must sign a pledge to serve for two years as a primary care physician in an under-served area after they complete their residencies.

    SUNY - Stony Brook
    SUNY - Downstate
    SUNY - Syracuse
    SUNY - Albany
    SUNY - NYU
SUNY - New York Medical College

Entrance to the The Sophie Davis School is highly competitive and our acceptance rate is about 18%. A recent graduate spent a year in Australia on a Fulbright Scholarship, studying Eastern complementary medicine. A current fifth year student has been named a Millennium Gates Scholar, a real distinction as most such scholars are either in mathematics or pure science fields. Our students are committed to their life dream of becoming physicians: 85% of entering Sophie Davis students actually complete medical school compared to a 50% attrition rate among freshmen entering premedical programs at four-year colleges and universities. Sophie Davis's educational approach results in a 45% enrollment of under-represented minorities, representing a diversity unparalleled at other medical schools in New York State.

To ensure the future of our mission, the School is focusing its efforts in three areas:

We are increasing exposure to clinical experiences as a real priority. The School is neither physically nor formally attached to a teaching hospital so we must form partnerships with other institutions. Currently, we are partners with eight community health centers located in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.

We are emphasizing the development of good communication skills. Given the shift in demographics in our urban centers and under-served communities, most of our graduates, as Primary Care physicians, will offer the first line of health defense for many of our newest citizens. A patient's compliance and health depend on that very first meeting. Good communication and understanding of cultural differences become paramount.

Our mission to bring under-represented minorities into the School and to emphasize Primary Care training has never been more important. Medical school enrollment overall has been declining, and the American Association of Medical Colleges' 3,000 by 2000 goal to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities has not been met. A number of scholarships for our students are available through the generosity of the Leonard and Sophie Davis, the William Randolph Hearst, the W. Clement & Jesse V. Stone, the Life Foundations and The Rita & Howard Shapiro Memorial Scholarship Fund. These scholarships allow us to attract qualified students to choose Sophie Davis as a preferred route to becoming a physician.

Both the concept and practice of The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education reinforce the City University's mission as a unique educational fount from which great futures can be attained by anyone with the grit and passion to learn.  College Columbia University

212-854-1754

Columbia College is a relatively small, coeducational, residential college situated in a large and complex university. These circumstances work to the advantage of our students, who often enjoy the individual, personal attention that only a small college can provide and, at the same time, attend classes that offer an impressive array of intellectual challenges and rewards.

Columbia College has had the best general education curriculum in the country for more than half a century. This common curriculum has created and sustained a community of discourse shared by the current student body with generations of alumni. As with other great traditions, however, this living discourse has not been static, but has evolved and developed across the years. And it will continue to do so.

The vitality of any tradition depends upon its constant renewal, and for this reason, among others, Columbia College's general education is conducted in small seminars. Although many excellent colleges offer one or two semesters of general education courses, such courses tend to be taught as large lectures in large halls filled with students taking notes. At Columbia College, students spend a substantial part of their first years in small classes, reading and discussing primary works of literature, philosophy, history, science, and social and political theory, and studying fine arts and music. Through discussion and debate, through writing, and through direct interaction between instructor and student, our core curriculum helps improve each student's ability to engage in the kinds of analytic, discursive, and imaginative thinking that will prove indispensable in both subsequent education and later life.

212-353-4100

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, established in 1859, is among the nation's oldest and most distinguished institutions of higher learning. The college, the legacy of Peter Cooper, occupies a special place in the history of American education. It is the only private, full-scholarship college in the United States dedicated exclusively to preparing students for the professions of art, architecture and engineering. The Cooper Union is located at Cooper Square, New York, NY 10003-7120.

New York City
Cooper Union exploits New York's diversity and resources as its extended campus. Student artists, sculptors and photographers study in the great museums, visit studios and galleries and work at a wide range of art internships. The School of Architecture taps in to New York's architectural community and the rich legacy is built on the environment. Engineering students have unparalleled opportunities to study the challenges posed for their discipline by one of the most complex cities in the world.

    History
Peter Cooper was a workingman's son who had less than a year of formal schooling. Yet he went on to become an industrialist and an inventor; it was Peter Cooper who designed and built America's first steam railroad engine. Cooper made his fortune with a glue factory and an iron foundry. Later, he turned his entrepreneurial skills to successful ventures in real estate, insurance, railroads and telegraphy. He even once ran for president.

In the late 1850s, when Cooper was a principal investor and first president of the New York, Newfoundland & London Telegraph Co., the firm undertook one of the 19th century's monumental technical enterprises—laying the first Atlantic cable. Cooper also invented instant gelatin, with help from his wife, Sarah, who added fruit to what the world would come to know as Jello.

If Cooper sounds like a real-life Horatio Alger, perhaps it is no surprise that three of Alger's tales tell of young men passing The Cooper Union's stately Foundation Building and, duly inspired, deciding immediately to lead productive and moral lives.

As one of the first colleges to offer a free education to working-class children and to women, Cooper Union was a pioneer long before access to education became public policy. Cooper's example motivated the founders of other prestigious colleges, such as Andrew Carnegie, Ezra Cornell and Matthew Vassar.

Peter Cooper's dream was to give talented young people the one privilege he lacked—a good education. He also wanted to make possible the development of talent that otherwise would have gone undiscovered. His dream, providing an education "equal to the best", has come true. Since 1859, Cooper Union has educated thousands of artists, architects and engineers, many of them leaders in their fields. Press "Blue Button" to explore The Cooper Union website.

In 1969, it became co-ed and nonsectarian, boldly reaching out to its surrounding communities. Our mission, to make available the transformational power of a postsecondary education to people who would not otherwise have the opportunity, has remained strong through all the growth and change of the last 55 years.

The center of New York University (NYU) is its Washington Square campus in the heart of Greenwich Village. One of the city's most creative and energetic communities, the Village is a historic neighborhood that has attracted generations of writers, musicians, artists, and intellectuals. Beyond the Village, New York City becomes an extension of the University's campus.

Some 175 years ago, Albert Gallatin, the distinguished statesman who served as secretary of the treasury under President Thomas Jefferson, declared his intention to establish "in this immense and fast-growing city... a system of rational and practical education fitting for all and graciously opened to all." Founded in 1831, New York University is now one of the largest private universities in the United States. Of the more than 3,000 colleges and universities in America, New York University is one of only 60 member institutions of the distinguished Association of American Universities.

From a student body of 158 during NYU's very first semester, enrollment has grown to more than 40,000 students attending 14 schools and colleges at five major centers in Manhattan and in more than 25 countries around the world. Today, students come from every state in the union and from 133 foreign countries. The faculty, which initially consisted of fourteen professors and lecturers now totals over 3,100 full-time members.

Enrollment in the undergraduate divisions of the University ranges between 100 and 6,500. While some introductory classes have large numbers of students, many classes are small. With more than 2,500 courses offered, the University awards more than 25 different degrees.

In addition to the schools and colleges in Manhattan, the University operates branch campus programs in Westchester County at Manhattanville College and in Rockland County at St. Thomas Aquinas College. Certain of the University's research facilities, notably the Nelson Institute of Environmental Medicine, are located in Sterling Forest, near Tuxedo, New York. Although overall the University is large, the divisions are small to moderate sized units - each with its own traditions, programs, and faculty.  Sutton Place Greenwich Village New York City Fashion Design Interior Design Advertising Graphic Design Frank Alvah Parsons Parsons -The New School - For Design

212-229-8900

Parsons The New School For Design has a rich history as a leader in art and design education. In 1970, the School became a division of the New School for Social Research -The New School. The campus moved from Sutton Place to Greenwich Village in New York City. The merger with a vigorous, fully accredited university was a source of new funding and energy, which expanded the focus of a Parsons education.

Parsons focuses on creating engaged citizens and outstanding artists, designers, scholars and business leaders through a design-based professional and liberal education. Parsons students learn to rise to the challenges of living, working and creative decision making in a world where human experience is increasingly designed. The school embraces curricular innovation, pioneering uses of technology, collaborative methods and global perspectives on the future of design.

Parsons has been a forerunner in the field of art and design since its founding in 1896. Parsons was first in:

The first program in Fashion Design
The first program in Interior Design
The first program in Advertising and Graphic Design

Each program has profoundly impacted American life. In 1939, nine years after Frank Alvah Parsons' death, the School officially adopted his name. By locating visual beauty in the ordinary things of middle-class American life, Parsons virtually invented the modern concept of design in America. From the beginning, the faculty cared about the spaces people lived in, the garments they wore, the advertising they read, the furniture and tableware they used. The principles they taught had the effect of democratizing taste and making it available to America on a broad scale. As the modern curriculum developed, many successful designers remained closely tied to the School, and by the mid-1960s, Parsons had become "the training ground for Seventh Avenue." 212-327-8000

The Rockefeller University is located at 1230 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021 in New York City. Founded by John D. Rockefeller, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was incorporated on June 14, 1901. It was the first institution in the United States devoted solely to biomedical research - to understanding the underlying causes of disease. Today, renamed Rockefeller University, it is one of the foremost research centers in the world, contributing to 23 Nobel Prizes as well as numerous other awards.

In its first century of accomplishment, Rockefeller was a leader in basic scientific research and graduate education. Among their many breakthroughs, world-renowned scientists at Rockefeller have:

Discovered that genes are made of DNA.
Found the Rh factor in blood.
Pioneered the physiology and chemistry of vision.
Demonstrated the connection between cholesterol and heart disease.
    Developed vaccines against meningitis.
Introduced methadone to manage heroin addiction.
Discovered that distribution of proteins to various cellular compartments is accomplished by a "ZIP code" system.

The First U.S. Biomedical Research Center
At the time of Rockefeller's founding, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, diphtheria and typhoid fever were considered the greatest known threats to human health. New research centers in Europe, including the Koch and Pasteur Institutes, were successfully applying laboratory science to understanding those and other diseases. Following their lead, The Rockefeller Institute became the first biomedical researcher center in the United States.

Rockefeller researchers made important contributions to understanding and curing disease.
Simon Flexner, first director of the Institute, developed and distributed an anti-meningitis serum.
Hideyo Noguchi studied the syphilis microbe and searched for the cause of yellow fever.
Louise Pearce developed a drug to use against African sleeping sickness.
Peyton Rous deduced that cancer can be caused by a virus.
Alexis Carrel, a Nobel laureate, trained doctors headed for the front to sterilize wounds, and thus prevent infection, with up-to-date methods.

A University is Born
In 1955, Rockefeller expanded its mission to include education, admitting its first class of graduate students. It granted its first doctoral degrees in 1959. In 1965, The Rockefeller Institute became The Rockefeller University, broadening its research mandate further. In the early 1960s, new faculty with expertise in physics and mathematics came to Rockefeller. In 1972, the University began its collaboration with Cornell University to offer graduate students an M.D.-Ph.D. program. Later, the Sloan-Kettering Institute became a partner in the program.

The Rockefeller University in the 21st Century
Like their predecessors early in the 20th century, some Rockefeller researchers today seek to solve urgent public health problems. Others focus on basic research. Various laboratories study bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, multidrug treatments for AIDS and genetic causes of cancer. Others are devoted to understanding the brain–how it develops during embryonic growth; how it makes sense of sights, sounds and smells; and what happens when Alzheimer’s disease develops. In addition, faculty focus their research on human genetics, molecular biology, neuroscience and protein chemistry. Press "Blue Button" to explore The Rockefeller University.

Bronx Community College is located at University Avenue at West 181 Street, Bronx, New York 10453. The establishment of Bronx Community College in 1957 crowned a decade of effort by civic-minded groups in Bronx County to meet the growing need for increased higher education facilities in the "Borough of Universities and Progress."

In April 1961, The City University of New York was created by the State Legislature, with Bronx Community College as one of its seven constituent undergraduate colleges. The City University now includes seventeen undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, a law school, a medical school, and an affiliated school of medicine.

In July 1973, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York acquired the New York University Heights Campus for the use of Bronx Community College. Beginning with the fall 1973 semester, operations were moved to the present 50-acre site overlooking the Harlem River. There are modern classrooms, lecture halls and laboratories; a student center, cafeteria and lounges; shaded walks and a grassy mall; athletic fields, tennis courts, and a swimming pool; and advanced media and library facilities.

Bronx Community College's important contribution to the cultural life of its students and the borough is felt through an organized program of concerts, plays, films, speakers, and art exhibits open to both students and the public.

Bronx Community College, in accordance with a 1999 mandate from the CUNY Board of Trustees, has a Writing Across the Curriculum program designed to improve students’ ability to write clear and correct prose and also to facilitate learning. A hallmark of the theory behind Writing Across the Curriculum is writing to learn, the idea that the process of writing helps students to focus upon a subject and organize their ideas in relation to it. Thus, writing helps students to master every subject. All students at BCC, as at the other CUNY colleges, are required to pass the CUNY Proficiency Exam (CPE) in order to obtain a degree or to transfer to a four-year college. History
Founded in 1931 as the Bronx campus of Hunter College. Established in 1968 as an independent college of The City University of New York and named for Herbert H. Lehman, the great New York Governor, U.S. Senator, philanthropist, and humanitarian. During World War II, Lehman's campus became the main national training site for women in the military. For six months in 1946, the campus served as interim headquarters for the newly formed United Nations.

For a decade before the entry of the United States in the Second World War, only women students attended, taking their first two years of study at the Bronx campus and then transferring to Hunter’s Manhattan campus to complete their undergraduate work. Shortly after U.S. entry into the war, the students and faculty vacated the campus and turned over the facilities to the U.S. Navy, which used them as a training station for the newly organized WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). 718-430-2000

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is one of the nation’s premier institutions for medical education, basic research and clinical investigation. A full-time faculty of more than 2,000 teaches, delivers health care and conducts research in every major biomedical specialty. From an original class size of 56, the College of Medicine has evolved into one of the largest medical schools in the country. Today, the student body includes 750 M.D. students, 394 Ph.D. students attending the Sue Golding Graduate Division, (117 of whom are in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program), and approximately 360 postdoctoral investigators currently receiving advance training at our Belfer Institute for Advanced Biomedical Studies. Approximately 7,000 Einstein alumni are among the nation’s foremost clinicians, biomedical scientists, and medical educators.

When the medical school opened its doors to its first class in 1955, The New York Times was already noting that “the new medical school’s distinguished and talented faculty assured the institution of a place in the ranks of the great medical schools in the world.” Among its pioneering educational initiatives, Einstein was among the first of the major medical schools to integrate bedside experience with learning, bringing first-year students into contact with patients and linking classroom study to case experience. In addition, the College of Medicine is widely known for its socially conscious approach to medicine. During the 1970s and 1980s it was a pioneer in the development of medical ethics as an accepted academic discipline in medical school curricula. Einstein was also the first private medical school in New York City to establish an academic Department of Family Medicine (1993), and it created New York’s first residency program in internal medicine with an emphasis on women’s health (1994).

The medical school is affiliated with five hospital centers: Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Beth Israel Medical Center, the University Hospital and Manhattan Campus for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, the Manhasset and New Hyde Park campuses of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Jacobi Medical Center; and the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. It is also affiliated with three mental health facilities and four long-term care facilities. Through its extensive affiliation network, Einstein runs the largest post-graduate medical training program in the United States, offering some 150 residency programs to more than 2,500 physicians in training.  Bronx NY 10461 genomics/proteomics stem cell biology cancer biology Graduate students The National Institute of General Medical Sciences NIGMS National Institutes of Health NIH Medical Scientist Training Program MSTP MD/PhD degree medical schools Yeshiva Univ - Albert Einstein Medicine

718-430-2000

Yeshiva University's - Sue Golding Graduate Division is located at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jack and Pearl Resnick Campus, 1300 Morris Park Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461. Since 1957, the Sue Golding Graduate Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine has provided a stimulating environment in which students acquire the knowledge and skills to attain the PhD and MD / PhD degrees and become independent scientists holding academic and industrial positions worldwide.

The Graduate Division provides an extremely collegial and mentored training experience where you will work personally with advisers at the cutting-edge of disease-relevant research in areas as diverse as genomics/proteomics, stem cell biology, cancer biology, and vaccine development. A great feature of the graduate program is its breadth. Graduate students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine often undertake interdisciplinary projects which draw on the scientific expertise of faculty in the basic science and clinical departments, resulting in faculty and senior graduate students publishing widely and having their work often cited both in professional journals and in the news.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), established the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) in 1964 to support research training leading to the combined MD/PhD degree. The program was designed to train investigators who could better bridge the gap between basic science and clinical research by providing both graduate training in the biomedical sciences and clinical training offered through medical schools. What began in 1964 with three programs has now grown to almost 40 MSTP programs.

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine's MSTP was one of the three original programs started in 1964, and continues its revolutionary and successful tradition. Continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's MSTP is larger than most others of its kind, enabling the program to have an administrative and academic identity. It is still small enough, however, to provide MSTP students with the integrated and individual attention their unique careers require. This combination has resulted in an outstanding record of placing its graduates in highly desirable post-graduate training positions and in successful academic careers.

Noting its commitment to high quality, The Princeton Review ranked Brooklyn College first for “most beautiful campus” in 2003 and among the top ten of “America’s Best Value Colleges” – a distinction accorded to only one other college.

The tradition of academic excellence is reflected in the accomplishments of Brooklyn College graduates. An outstanding faculty, highly praised academic programs, and distinguished graduates - these are the hallmarks of success at Brooklyn College. The College is continuing to develop programs and curricula that will train forthcoming generations of students.

The College’s nationally renowned core curriculum has been a central element in its educational offerings for a quarter of a century. It enrolls nearly a thousand students and offers priority registration and guaranteed access to required courses. And all students can use the College’s Web site to register for classes, check their grades, and keep track of their progress toward a degree.

The Brooklyn College Library, renovated and expanded in 2002, is technologically the most advanced in the City University. Construction currently underway at the west end of the campus will culminate in a new quadrangle and a building that consolidates under one roof all essential student services and athletic facilities. The New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York - CUNY is located at 300 Jay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. New York City College of Technology is the largest public, baccalaureate college of technology in the Northeast.

Our mission is focused on preparing a technically proficient workforce and well-educated citizens. The College’s offerings encompass the pre-professional, professional and technical programs that respond to regional economic needs and provide access to higher education for all who seek fulfillment of career and economic goals through education. The 56 registered programs offered allow graduates to pursue careers in the architectural and engineering technologies, the computer, entertainment, and health professions, human services, advertising and publishing, hospitality, business, and law-related professions, as well as programs in career and technical teacher education.

These programs extend from the only program in entertainment technology east of the Mississippi to the most award-winning public program in the culinary arts to be found anywhere; from healthcare programs that address critical social needs to a program in applied mathematics that prepares students to design computer-based models needed in the world of high finance; from advertising design and graphic arts programs to a facilities management program that prepares students to manage the star-wars-like control rooms of complex modern high-rise buildings. In essence, the College’s programs are geared to the needs of our students, the professions we support and the commerce that drives our economy.

While technologies have changed and professions have been transformed, what is at the heart of City Tech has remained constant - our basic educational approach. City Tech is a place where dedicated faculty, many joining us after successful professional careers in their chosen fields, work side-by-side with students in laboratory settings. The college was founded as a beacon of opportunity available to those who might not otherwise have access to higher education and it still performs this function today. And just as was true on the chilly morning in February of 1947, when the college opened its doors, we have one foot in the present and one in the future, keeping our programs aligned with the high-tech workforce needs of tomorrow.

    History
The College was founded in 1946, under the name “The New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences.” The urgent mission at the time was to provide training to GIs returning from the Second World War and to provide New York with the technically proficient workforce it would need to thrive in the emerging post-war economy. No one in 1946 could have predicted the transformation the College has experienced. From its beginnings as an Institute - to being chartered as a community college in 1957 - and subsequently transitioning to senior college status during the 1980’s - it has grown from serving 246 students in the class of 1947, to a population today of over 13,000 degree-students (almost 4,000 in baccalaureate degree programs) and serving over 15,000 others who participate in the College’s continuing education offerings.

The college is also expanding its wireless capability, opening new cafés and dining areas, installing plasma boards, updating the Student Union and several other buildings, and embarking on a variety of campus-beautification projects.

Because Queens is a commuter college, the administration is dedicated to making students feel that the college is their home-away-from-home, with over 100 clubs and a full athletics program. In fact, Queens is the only CUNY college that participates in Division II sports. A Child Development Center, staffed by professionals, offers inexpensive child care services to students with children. Ongoing cultural events include readings by renowned writers, concerts, and theatre and dance performances. The college is also home to the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, which houses more than 3,500 works of art.

The college offers over 115 undergraduate and graduate majors. Academic programs are organized into four divisions, which offer both day and evening courses: Arts and Humanities; Education; Mathematics and the Natural Sciences; and the Social Sciences. The college recently introduced new degree programs in Graphic Design and Neuropsychology as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration degree that offers majors in Finance, International Business, and Actuarial Studies. New additions to the graduate curriculum include a degree program in environmental geotechnology and two certificate programs: one in earth sciences for high school teachers and another in archives record management and conservation.

    CUNY Honors College
Queens College participates in the CUNY Honors College. This challenging program for academically gifted students provides full tuition, an academic expense account, mentors, internships, a free laptop, special seminars, and study abroad programs. Queens College also offers its own Honors programs in the arts and humanities, sciences, and social sciences to qualified students.

The college is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Fewer than 10 percent of the nation’s liberal arts colleges meet the stringent academic requirements necessary to host a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

City University Queens 11367 Manhattan  CUNY - School of Law

718-340-4200

The City University of New York - CUNY School of Law is located at 65-21 Main Street, Queens, NY 11367. Queens is one of the five Boroughs of the City of New York and is located across the East River and just minutes away from Manhattan. Queens has a population of 2.2 million residents representing all parts of the world and according to a U.S. News and World Report survey, is the most diverse borough in the country

Academic Philosophy
Opened in 1983, CUNY School of Law is the only law school that, from inception, has defined its mission as training law students for public interest and public service. Designed to prepare our students to practice our motto, "Law in the Service of Human Needs," our unique and integrated curriculum has made us a national leader in progressive legal education with the highest placement rate of graduates in public interest and public service careers.

The basic premise of the Law School's program is that theory cannot be separated from practice, abstract knowledge of doctrine from practical skill, and understanding the professional role from professional experience. Our curriculum integrates practical experience, professional responsibility, and lawyering skills with doctrinal study at every level. Forming the core of our lawyering curriculum are the skills recognized by the profession in its 1992 report from the ABA Taskforce on Law Schools and the Profession (commonly known as the MacCrate Report) as essential to successful law practice-problem solving, legal analysis and reasoning, legal research, factual investigation, communication (legal writing, oral argument), counseling, negotiation, litigation and alternative dispute-resolution procedures, organization and management of legal work, and recognizing and resolving ethical dilemmas.

We teach lawyering and practice skills through all three years of law school: first-year students acquire clinical experience through simulation exercises conducted in a required year-long Lawyering Seminar; second-year students take an advanced one-semester Lawyering Seminar in a public interest law area of their choice; third-year students earn 12-16 credits in either a field placement program or a live-client clinic.

Ten Reasons to Come to CUNY

An ongoing commitment to diversity, preparing students for practice in an increasingly multicultural world.

An excellent, approachable faculty of noted scholars and public interest practitioners.

The highest percentage of graduates placed in public interest jobs of any law school in the nation.

Justice initiatives that permit students, faculty and staff to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

The superb reputation of our graduates in public interest and public service jobs at local, state, national and international levels.

An outstanding, nationally ranked clinical program that provides opportunities for client representation to every third-year student.

Our graduates' strong New York State Bar Exam passage rate.

The intellectual and cultural opportunities available to students who become part of the nation's largest urban university.

Affordable tuition that allows graduates to pursue their career aspirations without unmanageable debt.

The only law school in the country whose stated mission is to train graduates to practice "Law in the Service of Human Needs."

CUNY - School of Law Graduates
CUNY graduates are everywhere - working in criminal defense and in law enforcement, in state and local government agencies, and at the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, in trade unions and representing undocumented workers, at legal services offices, domestic violence organizations and in private law firms, large and small. They work in the court system, as law clerks to federal, state and city judges and are beginning to take their places in the judiciary - on the New York Supreme Court, the Family Court, the Civil Court of the City of New York, and the Housing Court. They care about each other, about our students and the Law School, and about making the world a better place. They are our best resource and our greatest source of pride.

Manhattan College, overlooking Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, is an independent Catholic institution of higher learning which embraces qualified men and women of all faiths, races and ethnic backgrounds. Established in 1853, the College is founded upon the Lasallian tradition of excellence in teaching, respect for individual dignity, and commitment to social justice inspired by the innovator of modern pedagogy, John Baptist de La Salle.

The mission of Manhattan College is to provide a contemporary, person-centered educational experience characterized by high academic standards, reflection on faith, values and ethics, and life-long career preparation. This is achieved in two ways: by offering students programs which integrate a broad liberal education with concentration in specific disciplines in the arts and sciences or with professional preparation in business, education and engineering; and by nurturing a caring, pluralistic campus community. The learning experience at Manhattan College is enriched by cooperative programs with other institutions, by postgraduate professional programs and by capitalizing on its location on the edge of the cultural center and global marketplace that is New York City.

Our Jaspers receive the special advantages of a Manhattan education – a caring and scholarly faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and a strong network that links students and alumni to each other in mutually beneficial ways. Manhattan credentials elicit professional advice, internships, and often, placement in a student’s chosen profession. Our mentoring program is growing exponentially, offering opportunities for Jasper undergraduates and professionals in every field to interact. Through e-mail contacts, alumni visits, student internships and, in many cases, job placements, the Manhattan College family looks after its own. History
Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946 to serve the needs of local veterans at the end of World War II. Originally located in Endicott, five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University. When the college was incorporated into the State University of New York four years later, it was renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer, who devoted his later years to settling the area around Binghamton. In 1965 the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Campus Facilities
The Binghamton campus is spread over 887 acres on a wooded hillside above the Susquehanna River and features physical facilities that are modern, attractive, accessible and exceptionally well maintained. A special campus feature is the Nature Preserve, a 190-acre forest and wetland area with a six-acre pond that adjoins the campus.

    Athletic Facilities
Binghamton's extensive athletic facilities include two large gymnasiums, with swimming pools, an indoor track, and basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts. FitSpace, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, is available to the entire campus community. Outdoor facilities include 26 tennis courts, a fitness trail, a new 400-meter track and soccer field, and numerous playing fields. Our new Events Center is home to basketball, as well as indoor track and tennis.

    Science Complex
The four-building modern science complex includes a multi-climate greenhouse - one of the largest teaching and research facilities of its kind, divided into tropical, temperate, alpine, and desert zones and science laboratories equipped with some of the most sophisticated instruments and equipment available today.

    Performing Arts Complex
Binghamton's excellent facilities for the fine and performing arts include a world-class performance complex, the Floyd E. Anderson Center for the Performing Arts. The center features the 1,200-seat Osterhout Concert Theater with a retractable rear wall to allow for lawn seating, and a 450-seat Chamber Hall for small stage productions and recitals. Concerts, plays, dance performances, faculty and student recitals, and guest artists are all showcased in the center.

    University Art Museum
The University Art Museum has an Asian Art Gallery and a permanent collection of 3,000 art objects representing many periods and styles. On regular display are special traveling and loan exhibits as well as works of University artists.

    Academic Buildings
Construction on two Academic Buildings was completed in 1998. These buildings, whose striking designs were featured in Progressive Architecture, are marked by expansive glass exteriors and modern classrooms, lecture halls and computing facilities. They are home to the School of Management, the Decker School of Nursing, and the School of Education and Human Development, as well as the Office of Admissions.

    University Union
A new addition to the University Union, which serves as a focal point for student activities, opened in the spring of 2002 and is home to an expanded bookstore and dining area, as well as student services, clubs and media.

    Housing
Residence facilities accommodate 5,500 undergraduates in a variety of housing arrangements. To maintain a personal and a friendly environment, residence halls are grouped into six collegiate units, each having its own academic, recreational and organizational life. Our newest, Mountainview, with its four residential buildings and collegiate center offers the most modern option for students. Freshmen who live away from home are required to live on-campus and are guaranteed.

Binghamton University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

The Decker School of Nursing is accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education and is a member of the CCNE and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

"A college education not only prepares you to do something - a college education prepares you to do anything!" College can equip us for our leisure time just as much, if not more so, than it can equip us for our working lives. College educated people are able to appreciate and enjoy literature, art, music, essays, movies, and other products of the culture. Or, to put it better, the sort of appreciation and enjoyment that they have is deeper because of their education.

We live in a democracy, the success of which requires that each of us participates actively and intelligently in the democratic institutions. Such participation includes not simply voting, but critically examining the candidates’ positions, speaking out as an advocate for policy change, perhaps even serving in a leadership role on a governmental body. Moreover, it requires being critical of the institutions themselves, and seeing what needs changing and why. The appreciation of history, the ability to formulate a persuasive argument, an analytic skill with budgets and statistics and polling data - these are all skills you get as a college educated person and they are skills necessary for successful participation as a citizen in a democracy.

The developments in technology and the advances in science are an ever-present, and ever-more-important part of our lives. The growing presence of medications in the treatment of psychological maladies, the possibilities opened up by study and manipulation of DNA, and the prospects for artificial intelligence (just to name a few) are developments that require an intelligent response. Which of the many possibilities opened up to us by science should be pursued? How reliable is DNA testing? Should we treat depression with a drug or with traditional therapy? College graduates are well-positioned to answer these questions because they know some science, and can distinguish quackery from good scientific practice.

This last point applies not simply to the advances in science and technology, but to the information that comes to us via the media. We need to be able to distinguish the foolish fad from the important trend; we need to be able to determine which news outlets are reliable and which are overly biased; we need to be able to figure out where to turn for information and how to navigate between the twin vices of gullibility and skepticism. During your college education you will spend a significant amount of time doing research and evaluating sources. Upon completing college, you will be better situated to be intelligent consumers of information.

Finally, a college education equips people with the tools for self-examination that renders them able to make informed and intelligent choices about the direction of their own lives. College may equip you for a career, but you have to decide which career to pursue, and how to balance the competing demands of work and family. ... Should you work for (or buy the products of) a company that exploits child laborers? Should you buy your groceries from a large national chain or from the local, but perhaps more expensive, market? At what point should you put a moral principle ahead of economic interest? These are decisions that we all must make; if we don’t, someone else will make them for us. And by providing the experience and guidance at thinking through these sorts of questions a college education will turn you into a reflective, morally mature person.

I would argue that the benefits of a college education that I just listed are actually more valuable than the fact that you can get a good job with a college diploma. The reason that college degrees translate into high-end salaries and good jobs has more to do with the skills one acquires in college than with the discipline-specific knowledge of the individual courses. No one is going to give you a better job because of your knowledge of Shakespeare or Plato or the Napoleonic Wars. But students who are successful in their English, Philosophy, and History classes are independent and creative thinkers who can write and speak clearly, who can juggle many responsibilities, who can research a project, and who can take steps to educate themselves.

Even when it comes to the more vocationally-related majors like nursing or business or education or biology, it is sure to be the case that the knowledge you will need in your job will far outstrip what you will learn in your college classes. This is not a failing of the college classes, it is just a fact that specific industries and jobs require highly specific knowledge. It is also a fact that what you need to know to be an accountant or a teacher or a nurse or a biologist will change in response to advances in those fields. One of the goals of a college education is to give you the general knowledge into which you can fit the more specific knowledge required by your particular job. And, more importantly, a college education will give you the ability to teach yourself, so that when you need a new job skill, you’ll be prepared.

When you get a job, the employer very likely will train you to do whatever it is that needs to be done. Large corporations have entire human resources departments and internal “universities” the sole purpose of which is to train the new employees to perform the necessary tasks. The Widget Corporation will understand if you can’t come in on the first day of the job and start making the widgets; their trainers will show you how to do that. But what they won’t show you is how to write clearly, how to organize your time, how to give a presentation to the Board of Directors, how to ask questions, and how to make decisions. What an employer wants above all is an employee who can think, and that is what they expect from people with a college education. Once you understand that it is these more generally intellectual skills which employers desire, you’ll realize that they can be acquired in just about any major. Selected text from an article written by: Andrew P. Mills, an assistant professor of philosophy at Otterbein College.

Colleges and Universities in the United States
Select a college that offers the degree and programs that will help ensure your success in your chosen career. Be sure your school is accredited.

    Accreditation in the United States
The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. There are regional and national accrediting agencies, recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education, as reliable authorities concerning the quality of education or training offered by the institutions of higher education or higher education programs they accredit.

Without accreditation by a nationally recognized accredited organization, a school is not eligible to participate in government student assistance programs. This means as a student, you will not be eligible for federal grant or loan money. Most employers who offer tuition assistance will not reimburse your tuition if you attend a school that is not accredited. If you intend to transfer credits from one school to another, you will only be able to do so if you attended an accredited school.
