SUNY's Crown Jewel SUNY - University at Buffalo is located at 17 Capen Hall, Buffalo, New York 14260-1660. Academic excellence is the foundation for the many diverse intellectual, cultural, and societal contributions that UB makes every day.
Innovative and Dynamic The University at Buffalo is a premier research-intensive public university. UB is the largest and most comprehensive university center in the State University of New York system and the first public university in New York to be admitted (in 1990) into the Association of American Universities, joining North America’s other leading research universities. UB is a leader and an innovator in higher education and in beneficial discoveries. Our work in education, research, and service is guided by our mission to improve the quality of life for the people of our region and to the world at large.
A new paradigm for Discovery Through the University at Buffalo 2020 strategic planning process, UB is taking control of its future, determining where it is going and how it is going to get there. With input from faculty, the university has identified, and will invest in, nine areas of strategic strength that, along with a commitment to academic excellence, will be the foundation elevating UB to the ranks of the nation’s top public research universities.
Prominent University The University at Buffalo began in a few lecture rooms in 1846. It was a private institution for one hundred sixteen years before it accepted a public role. What had already grown into a fine regional university soon became a research-intensive institution of national stature. This private-public heritage endows the University at Buffalo with a special character: great independence of spirit in the service of the people of New York and the nation.
Academic Strengths Our strengths in medicine, engineering, and computer science enable us to conduct multidisciplinary research and provide education at a level of excellence that few universities can match. The faculty of UB’s professional schools share an unusually strong research orientation with their counterparts in the arts and sciences, and together they have established an outstanding record of research, scholarship, and creative activity.
University at Buffalo offers its students an abundance of learning choices. With over 300 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs, we have more academic opportunities than any other public institution in New York or New England. Our study abroad programs, internship opportunities, and special major programs (which you can design for yourself) allow UB students to develop the education they want.
At UB, we take pride in offering our students the best and most exciting learning environment. Our commitment to cutting-edge research and diverse creative activity is part of our interdisciplinary approach to education. From our state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities, to our experienced and committed faculty, to our investment in integrated technology resources, students graduate from UB with degrees that count and experiences that prepare them for the careers of the 21st Century.
As a public university, our tuition is only a fraction of the cost of attending a private college or university. There are also many scholarships and assistantships available - so both undergraduate and graduate students will have the opportunity to minimize debt after graduation. In all ways, a UB education will prepare you for the career and life you're seeking.
