A recently completed multi-million dollar capital redevelopment project included a new 230,000 square foot terminal, parking garage, Air Traffic Control Tower, and cargo facility. The airport has also embarked on a five-year $232 million Capital Plan to improve and maintain safety and to meet the needs of air travelers and air carriers well into the 21st Century.

A Bit of History
"Albany owns the distinction of establishing the first municipal landing site for airplanes. The first strip was located at a former polo field on Loudonville Road, three miles north of the city.

"After one season it became evident that the field was not suitable and the city's 'airport' was transferred to Westerlo Island whose long, level stretches along the Hudson River, south of the city, seemed the ideal location.

"Compared to modern-day airports, the simplicity of the Westerlo Island field had all the elements of pioneering. Yet, practically every famous airman of the day had landed there including participants in the first "cross country air race" to famed aviator Charles Lindbergh.

"It was still Quentin Roosevelt Field when Col. Charles A. Lindbergh landed his "Spirit of St. Louis" shortly after his historic flight to Paris. Aviation buffs considered his 22,000-mile tour of America to be a greater feat of precision flying than his solo flight from New York City to Paris, since he was never more than ten minutes late at any stop. Other famous aviators who landed in Albany included Amelia Earhart, James Doolittle and Clarence Chamberlain.

"In 1993, the Albany County Airport Authority was created to oversee the Airport's operation. Plans for a $184 million dollar renovation project that would include a new terminal, parking garage, air traffic control tower and cargo facility were unveiled on January 10, 1996.

"The terminal was designed to demonstrate the region's rich Dutch and Shaker heritage through its brick exterior walls punctuated with large, round windows and interior walls of maple and cherry. A long glass canopy covers the entrance to the terminal.

"In June of 1998 the new terminal officially opened. In February of 1999, the Airport officially opened a new, 1600-car parking garage. An 800-car addition opened in 2001.

A Bit of History
Teterboro is the oldest operating airport in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. Walter C. Teter acquired the property in 1917. During World War I, North American Aviation operated a manufacturing plant on the site. After the war, the airport served as a base of operations for Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aircraft designer. The first flight from the present airport site was made in 1919. During World War II, the Army and Air Force operated the airport. The Port Authority purchased it on April 1, 1949 from Fred L. Wehran, a private owner and later leased it to Pan Am World Airways, and then to its successor organization, Johnson Controls, for 30 years until December 1, 2000, when the Port Authority assumed full responsibility for the operation of Teterboro.

Teterboro airport embraces its own history and that of the entire aviation industry with the inclusion of the Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum of NJ on the airport grounds. Founded in 1972, it is the first state aviation hall of fame in the nation, honoring the men and women who brought outstanding aeronautical achievements to the state.

JFK has been at the forefront of aviation since its first commercial flight in 1948. In April 1942, New York City began placing hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of Idlewild Golf Course. Initial plans were for a modest 1,000-acre airport, but by the time construction was complete Idlewild Airport had grown to five times that size. Commercial flights began in July 1948. On December 24, 1963, the airport was rededicated John F. Kennedy International Airport in memory of the nation’s 35th president. Today, JFK is the nation’s leading international gateway, with more than 80 airlines operating from its gates

LaGuardia has been operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, under a lease with the City of New York, since June 1, 1947. In 2004, the Port Authority and the City of New York concluded an agreement that ensures the agency's continued operation of LaGuardia and JFK International through 2050.

LaGuardia contributes nearly $11 billion in economic activity to the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region, generating about 100,000 jobs and $4 billion in annual wages and salaries. Nearly 8,000 people are employed at the airport.

A Bit of History
In the mid-thirties, New York's mayor at that time, Fiorello LaGuardia, led a strong campaign to develop a more central airport in New York. Eventually, it was decided that the small, centrally located North Beach Airport would be overhauled and redeveloped. Covering just over 500 acres / 200 hectares, the new New York Municipal Airport was opened in 1939, soon to be named as the New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

The airport site was first occupied by the Gala Amusement Park, a popular destination owned by the Steinway family. In 1929, the park was transformed into a 105-acre private flying field and first named Glenn H. Curtiss Airport after aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss, and then re-named North Beach Airport.

In 1937, New York City took over the airport and enlarged the grounds with the purchase of adjoining land and by filling in 357 acres of waterfront along the east side. In 1939, it re-opened with a new name, New York Municipal Airport-LaGuardia Field. The airport was leased to the Port Authority in 1947.

Today, LaGuardia Airport is one of the busiest in the nation, handling more than 23 million passengers in 2008.

Stewart has a long and varied history that goes back to the earliest days of aviation. In 1930, Archie Stewart, an aviation buff and descendant of a prominent local dairy farmer, donated 220 acres of land to the city of Newburgh to be used as an airport. Four years later, the city of Newburgh transferred the land to the U.S. government for $1.

In 1939, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point built the first airfield at Stewart for cadet aviation training, later dedicating it as the "Wings of West Point." In 1948, the airfield became Stewart Air Force Base. SWF was deactivated and acquired by the state of New York in 1970.

In 1989, American Airlines announced the beginning of scheduled passenger service at the airport, followed by American Eagle and United Express. That same year, the airport opened its 50,000-square-foot air cargo building, and the U.S. Postal Service opened its new 300,000-square-foot Federal Mail Distribution Facility. On March 31, 2000, SWF became the nation's first privatized commercial airport under a 99-year lease agreement with National Express.

In 2007, the Port Authority took over operations at Stewart and committed $500 million as part of a ten-year capital improvement plan to expand the airport.

"In April 1942, four months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which precipitated the entrance of the United States into World War II, the Town of Islip entered into contract with the federal government to build an airfield on Town-owned land for potential military purposes during the war. Within months, the Civil Aeronautics Administration – predecessor to today’s Federal Aviation Administration – constructed three paved runways, and named the airport MacArthur Airport, after General Douglas MacArthur, General of the Army.

In 1944, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation built the first hangar at the airport. Five years later, after the federal government returned the airport to the control of the Town of Islip, the Town built the airport’s first terminal building preparing the way for commercial service.

In 1960, Allegheny Airlines was the first commercial airline to offer scheduled flights to Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. The General Douglas MacArthur Terminal was completed in 1966, and a few years later, American Airlines began operating non-stop flights to Chicago.

In the 50 years since Long Island MacArthur Airport introduced scheduled air service, the airport has become a major transportation hub and economic engine of the region. During the decade between 1999 and 2009 passenger traffic grew with the airport now serving approximately two million passengers a year through its two commercial carriers: Southwest Airlines, and legacy carrier US Airways Express.

As of 2010, the only legacy carrier service serving the airport is US Airways Express operating short distance shuttle flights to its hub at Philadelphia Airport, where passengers can make connections to 800 destinations worldwide. Southwest Airlines offers non-stop service to several Florida cities as well as hubs in Baltimore, Chicago, and Las Vegas, which offer connections throughout the Southwest system.
