District Overview Briarcliff's School system is in a community committed to traditional values in education. Our students are housed in three schools, an elementary school containing grades from kindergarten through fifth, middle school housing grades six through 8 and a high school, grades nine through twelve. The schools operate under the jurisdiction of a five member Board of Education whose goal is to provide each student with a strong foundation of the basic fundamentals of learning in order to prepare them for college as well as to be useful and productive citizens.
Educational Philosophy The Briarcliff Schools are committed to the philosophy of helping each child develop into a mature individual who will be a contributing member of society. The school shares the responsibility with parents and the community for meeting the needs of the whole child -- intellectual, physical, civic, moral, and aesthetic. The school, however, has a primary responsibility for the intellectual development of the child -- the acquisition of the tools and habits of learning and the assimilation of a basic body of skills and knowledge. While certain aspects of learning require memorization of facts, the school must also encourage creative and independent thinking. Each child has different gifts and learning styles, and develops at different rates. Therefore, insofar as possible, the school must try to meet the individual needs of each child by offering alternative methods of learning, options in course selection, and a broad range of educational programs for students with different life goals. However, within each grade or subject level there must be minimum measurable standards of achievement.

Statement of Philosophy Greenburgh Central School District No. 7 is a school district with a diverse student body. The diverse social, economic, and cultural heritages of our students are an asset which enrich the school life of the students and prepare them for the society in which they will live. We have a responsibility to maintain a diversity of staff and to provide for the interaction of our children in order to develop a healthy, stable, and democratic community.
This demands a humanistic approach that must consider the similarities and the differences of all peoples. Top priority must also be given to preparing students for a useful career and an enriched cultural life. Since society, in all its aspects, is ever-changing, the curriculum should reflect these changes. Students and instructional staff are encouraged to be participants in the process of change as it affects our curriculum. We also believe that the responsibility for preparing our youth for this ever-changing society must be shared with the home and other institutions in the community. The school must maintain effective communications with all socializing agencies, since our common concerns are: an intelligent, realistic preparation for the future, an atmosphere conducive to learning, and a curriculum suited to individual needs.

We try to create educational environments where students are well-known and feel a sense of connection. In the Hommocks Middle School, the House Model was implemented to create a small school-within-a school setting. Each house has approximately 300 students, 100 per grade level and utilizes 12 classrooms that are contiguous or within close proximity to each other. Team meetings amongst teachers provide time for the staff to discuss the progress of individual students, plan curriculum and interdisciplinary projects as well as consult with support staff. Each house works to create bonds between students and staff and amongst students.
Personalization at the high school was also one of the goals behind the extensive renovations and addition undertaken at Mamaroneck High School. The high school strives to create ways for students to make connections, be it through academic engagement, the arts, extracurricular activities and/or athletics. The new facilities offer students more places to gather and meet in groups formally and informally in the middle of a very large campus and give them easier access to support staff of counselors, school psychologist and a student activities coordinator.
Academically, the high school offers some interesting electives in addition to the usual Regents and Advanced Placement courses. A fairly new science elective is called "Criminalistics". It focuses on the use of the sciences of biology, chemistry and physics in crime solving. The "Art of Film" class teaches students to discover new ways to look at film. They see films, read scripts, biographies and critical commentaries as well as write their own critical and analytical paper on an individual filmmaker. The study of Chinese within the Foreign Language department engages many students who continue to pursue their study of Chinese in college and beyond.

"We are always striving to be more flexible, offering services based on new technology, new standards, or new needs. That is reflected in many of our offerings. At The Tech Center, computers are thoroughly integrated into everyday teaching. Academic courses in English, math, economics, science, and health are offered at The Tech Center building to make it easier for students to manage their schedules and to help them earn their diplomas. The end result of a Tech Center education is a successful transition to the world of work or college.
"In Special Education, children are prepared for the world after they leave us — back to their home district or to work in the larger community. Through innovative programs, such as Community Outreach Program and MOVE, they are encouraged to move and communicate more effectively.
"Nationally known educational experts are brought to BOCES on a regular basis to help train teachers in the new standards, science techniques, or data management, to name just a few priorities. We offer districts a variety of programs, from an on-line application system to cooperative bidding and school communications. In each case, quality and economics play an important part.
"Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES reaches across the spectrum in terms of the children it serves, from those with special needs to those with special gifts. We are living in a world that says every child should succeed. For some, this is a difficult challenge, but we are determined to use the tools necessary to make that happen. For others, we can use more sophisticated tools to provide a higher-level learning experience. Without BOCES, many of these students would not be able to meet with the kind of success they are capable of achieving . . ." James T. Langlois, District Superintendent

Special Education Department
The over-riding principle by which Special Education operates is to offer services in the least restrictive environment. This means, services are provided to the maximum extent appropriate, providing an education in the same manner as it is provided to every other child, alongside peers in a general educational environment, in their home district, in their home classrooms. Only if a multi-disciplinary team concludes that a child’s needs are not being addressed in the general classroom will that child be placed in a special education setting for some part or all of the day.
Individual Educational Plan (IEP) An IEP addresses the unique needs of the individual learner. IEPs are drawn up for all children who have difficulties affecting their ability to learn. The IEP for every student is reviewed annually. Depending on circumstances, an IEP may be reviewed several times a year. Many Districts conduct a comprehensive re-evaluation every three years.

Westchester County Education
Westchester residents and businesses alike recognize that their most valuable resource is human capital and invest accordingly. The county’s outstanding educational facilities provide excellence at all levels, from pre-school to post-graduate, and include technical and vocational skills development. Westchester’s school districts reflect the diversity of the county in many ways, and all share a mutual commitment to excellence and achievement. School districts vary in enrollment size, from smaller village districts to larger urban systems.
Expenditures per pupil are substantial throughout the county. Pupil/teacher ratios are kept low, and support personnel and services are extensive. Westchester continues to attract well qualified professionals to staff its schools. Many teachers are educated at the master’s level and beyond and continue to participate in ongoing professional activities. Four Westchester schools were among the 12 in New York to win recognition in the 1994-95 Blue Ribbon Schools Program sponsored by the US Department of Education.
Westchester’s school districts are in the vanguard of innovative educational concepts and programs. Involvement, commitment and support on the part of teachers, administrators, parents, local business and government leaders have created dynamic and stimulating learning environments to accommodate the plurality of needs and talents in the student population. Within New York State, Westchester students excel in the Regents examinations, pupil evaluation programs and preliminary competency tests. SAT scores in the county exceed state and national averages, and an exceptionally large proportion of students take the exam. Most Westchester high school students go on to college, with some districts reporting close to or 100 percent enrollment.
For those students wishing to enter the workforce directly, many vocational programs are offered within local school districts and through the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). These programs include Occupational Education, Special Education, Instructional Services, Information Systems and Interscholastic Athletics and Transportation Services. In addition, Westchester County contains several Special Act Districts, which provide unique educational and therapeutic opportunities to students, between the ages of five (5) and twenty-one (21) who have experienced difficulty in previous school settings.
Westchester offers a choice of private elementary and secondary schools as well. Among these are a number of culturally-oriented institutions, such as the German School, the French-American school and Keio High School, a Japanese high school; indications of Westchester’s increasingly global population. In addition, Westchester is home to more than twenty post-secondary schools, almost all of which grant degrees, and several business schools offer certificate programs.
